What has your business journey looked like so far?

When I turned 35, I had a look at what I have accomplished so far in my life, and thought I needed to do something for me and what makes me happy, as life is too short.

So, I did some research into makeup and courses that I could do, as I thought that might be a place to start. In 2018 I enrolled in a Master in Makeup Course at Face Agency in Adelaide one night a week for 18 weeks. I always found that being in a classroom atmosphere a better way of learning for me as it is a room full of likeminded people and bouncing ideas off of one another was a great way to learn and get feedback there and then. Thus began my love of Beauty and all it has to offer.

After finishing this course, I had a hunger to know more about the beauty industry. I then began pestering my beauty therapist about where they did their training and their recommendations for where they would suggest studying through. The Heather Langton Academy of Beauty Therapy kept coming up and so I decided to take the next step and signed up to start my Certificate 3 in Beauty Services and Facial and Microdermabrasion course’s part time 2 days and one night a week in Adelaide. All whilst working full time.

After finishing this I wanted to know more so I wanted to go back and complete my Diploma in Beauty Therapy after watching the Diploma students throughout my studies, and the more advanced treatments they were learning looked exiting. Covid put a spanner in the works and delayed me completing my Diploma. Towards the end of completing my Certificate 3 I started my business from home in the spare room which I quickly outgrew that space and needed to look for a bigger place to set up.

I then moved to the main street in Orroroo where I am currently working from and has been the best decision I’ve made. The town of Orroroo and neighbouring towns have been very supportive and love the fact that they say when they enter, they feel so relaxed and welcomed as soon as they walk in and the convenience of not having to drive hours to have treatments done.

Last year I resigned from my full-time job of 10.5 years and took the plunge in doing what I love full time.

What is the biggest lesson you have learned since starting your business, and is there anything you'd do differently?

I wish I'd have taken the plunge sooner, but glad for all the life experiences I have had along the way that has got me to this point in my life. It has been very daunting and a big step outside my comfort zone, and you never know how it will all work out, but you never know if you don’t give it go.

Also, coming from other job roles where you are employed to look after a particular part of a business and not covering every aspect. It has certainly opened my eyes to a lot more of what it takes to keep a small business going. I have certainly found my strengths and weaknesses and areas where I need to work on more and always continuing to update my skills and adding new services for people to indulge in and treat themselves with.

What are you most proud of within your business:

That I have created and providing a calming, relaxed and safe space for people to come. Where they can come in and leave all their worries and thoughts at the door and can walk out feeling refreshed, lighter and rejuvenated.

We all have busy lives but whether you’re a woman or a man it is a space for everyone, where the outside world and its problems are put on hold for a moment and people can enjoy the moment for themselves. That for me makes me truly happy and proud of what I have created for people.

Where do you see your business in the next 5 years:

In the next five years I would like to see my business expand offering a range of different treatments, where people can feel relaxed and pampered and can get the day spa feeling without having to drive a few hours to get the experience.

Also, looking at employing someone to work alongside me and hopefully in the future have a bigger place to have more room for the treatments that will be on offer.

How do you think engaging with Daisy Designs to build a brand helped your business:

Working with Emma at Daisy Designs has been immensely helpful in building my brand. I tried designing my own design but design, social media are both not my strong suit and Emma has been super helpful and patient with me throughout the whole process and journey. I recommend her to anyone that is in business or just starting up, she will point you in the right direction.

Finally, what advice would you give to other start-up businesses?

The advice I would give other start up businesses would be to find something you're passionate about, and give it a go, don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t. You're never too old to try new things and testing ideas and things on friends and families first, getting their feedback they will be your honest critics and champions of what you are doing.
